Hi. I'm a filmmaker from Argentina. I wasn't able to found any "fulldome cameras" and need to see if it's because:

1) There is only one camera or very few of them, and you can only produce with the few companies have them.

2) You shoot with any wide angle lens and give the "fulldome look" with software

3) You tell me...

I would like very much to produce in this format, and don't know how to do that yet.

Thank you very much, excuse my english!

Damian,

Option 1 - I didn't really understand - there are very few purpose built cameras

Forget option 2

Option 3:

You can use a Ladybug from Point Grey.

If you can get away with HD video then consider DSLRs - Canon or Nikon with something like a 4.5mm or 4.88mm lens. Be aware that they crop the sensor when recording video.

If you're OK with truncated video, then you can truncate in-camera - I built a nice rig with a 4.88mm lens on a Panasonic GH1 with a shift adapter.

For higher resolutions consider a Red Scarlet or Epic with a 4.5mm lens or perhaps a Silicon Image 2K.

Keep an eye on the Elphel and Apertus projects

Pete

Hello Damian,

What kind of content do you want to create? Depending of the type of content (purely shot by camera or combined with cgi) you have different options.

I agreed with the previous answers: single camera and fisheye lens or camera cluster (as the solution from PtGrey).

I gather regularly information here http://pear.ly/YW6v about the different solutions (and problems to be solved) when one want to create content for dome.

In the near future we will post a blog on modifying the GoPro to create FD content.
