So, any methodology, or template ideas?
I am using Celtx (www.celtx.com) to do stories, and was wondering if anyone else has been thinking about methods.
Personally, I am using a circle, at times, surrounded by rectangles, labeling them according to north south east west up n up s, etc...
And so... It takes some thinking, hahah outside the ummm... box?

Hey Dave!

What we've done in the past for storyboarding for our first show was to cut the dome in half and show it in a flat sense.

Here's a finished example

If you were wanting to use the template, you can grab the PDF Peter Althoff made here:

Dome Storyboard Template

In our more recent show we were needing to storyboard out a new section that we were redesigning. One of the problems we ran into with using the flat template was that it wasn't the whole picture of what the shot was going to look like. What it meant was that we had to scramble to build content, or to completely rethink the shot so it would work in the dome.

To combat this we tried to actually draw the dome master, accounting for the distortion of the projection. It's certainly a lot trickier, and can have some benefits as well as some drawbacks. It was a little easier for us to draw it since we have a mini-dome inside our office that we have photoshop running through, allowing us to draw directly onto the surface. I talk about it a little bit in our blog post:

When in Dome

I think that for the best result with the most accurate representation is unfortunately to just make a very rough animatic, or just still frames taken from a 3d program with the proper distortion. You could also try and skip some steps and build the boards in a program like After Effects (or maybe Photoshop, I'm not familiar if there are dome projection filters though).

Hope this helps!

(I'm also not sure if html is enabled here, so I apologize if the links are broken)
