Interactive Portable Dome Project - Can anyone help?

Hi,

We are working on an interactive portable dome project showcasing various media content to students. We are coming across technical hurdles and were hoping some of you more experienced dome users can help us. We are new to this technology and apparently are entering 'uncharted' territory. Here is the issue:

Fully Immersive Therapeutic Environment

Hi everyone!

I'm a new member and was delighted to find this site! I'm doing an MA in Art and Media Practice part time over 2 years in London. The project I am undertaking is to create a full dome therapeutic environment. I would like to use my dome in hospitals, holistic centers, festivals etc. I want to be able to project video images rather than computer based graphics. I'm just going to talk a little about my project and perhaps people will be able to share their experiences and… Continue

Seeking to meet the german fulldome community this week

Hi to all my German colleagues. Sorry for this last minute post, got the idea to contact the group a bit late and must admit that the official international collaboration channels don't have a clue about what i'm talking about... but I feel this could be of interest to all the German fulldome community.

I'm in Munich today and tomorrow morning and in Berlin Thursday and Friday. I still have some free time on my agenda and I would like to meet fulldome members in these two cities if… Continue

BRIGHTNESS from the Sony SRX T420

I saw the Sony SRXT420 at Dome Day in the Cincinnati museum. With the "8 K" lens it is brighter than their IMAX projector. Two of these can cover the dome and be brighter than IMAX.

This is significant. Typical IMAX projectors also vary in the evenness of the light distribution by a factor of 2. The T420 was very even all the way around. I measured with a Minolta LS 100 light meter.

Can you tell I'm excited?

I feel that it has the potential to be even brighter:

1. The… Continue

domefest news

Hey all,

I'm tweeting my little brain out (well, it's a lot for my attitudes toward such things) over at http://www.twitter.com/domefest

Okay, some of those tweets, may not be so informative, but it's where I'm pushing any news I can find time to print. Have a looksy. Meanwhile, a couple notes:

-About 45 entries to the jury. They're long and big: Most 4k, average length 4-min. Most reliable… Continue

The dome as a public performance space

We are actively doing research at the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] to define new type of performance spaces. Here's a video about the DOMAGAYA event we did last year in Quebec city with our inflatable dome, the SATosphere. While most of the domes outside planetariums seem to be used only for Cocktails and product launches (agree that it can provide an interesting form of funding for the technology) we are interested in using these technologies to define new types of artforms and public… Continue

30 meter full dome projection

Office Broomer's full dome projection during daytime. We projected in our 30 meter dome with a massive 180.000 ansi lumen projection system. No blackout screen was used. On top of that 8 layers of alpha projecting angels. These angels were triggered by visitors during the entrance of a event.

DomeFest 2009 dates

Hey all,

My inbox has been ringing off the hook for months with DF09 inquiries. Thank you and please accept my apologies for being unresponsive. It’s been a very very busy and interesting year here at the ARTS Lab.

So here’s where we are:

We’ve been scheming and dreaming about DomeFest 2009 and have a lot of special programs planned. And we’ve been working to find the right time to gather ( and lots of partners to arrange).

We’ve finally landed upon… Continue

SAT support the introduction of a Dome Camera in Blender 2.5

The Society for Arts and Technology research group, SAT[Metalab] in Montreal has worked with the Blender open source community to support the introduction of a fisheye dome camera for virtual walktroughs and immersive 3d film. Hope to see a lot more open tools soon. Anyone knows about an open source multi projection blending system for domes?

The Truth About 2K, 4K and The Future of Pixels (stole the title from the article!)

Interesting article on pixels from John Galt, Panavision Senior Vice President of Advanced Digital Imaging over on CreativeCOW:

This article ties in with some of my thoughts on the resolution race we are seeing in Fulldome display's at the moment. Not all… Continue

FullBuilding?

At ARTS Lab, I'm always blathering on about fulldome as not only an important medium* outright, but also as a launch-point for learning to design for all the crazy places and ways we're splaying pixels beyond the 4:3 and 16:9 frames and personal-to-multiplex display scales. On that point, check out this Times Square monstrosity:…

Enter the Allosphere

“There’s nothing like it in the world,” says host JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, the brain-parent of this enormous round room, this gateway to immersive media experiential bliss. She’s not exactly right — there have been large immersive theaters since the early 1990s — but the Allosphere is both more immersive and less subjective, according to its proponents, as you will soon see.…
