Tracing muons from space in real time in the 30 meter dome

It is been a while, little time to post the right things !

Here a project I did last year for Radboud University from The Netherlands, visualising muon particles from outer space in real time in a 30 meter dome.  I was fortunate to form a dream team with people from all over the world to help us out in visualising. We used 12 muon detectors in a ring on the ceiling and 12 on the ground. An FPGA worked as discriminator so we could localize direction. These signals were send to Isadora , from there on it controlled by OSC the Blender engine from Dalai Felinto, Martins Upitis and Mike Pan and the Proces machine from Memo Akten. The installation also controlled a surround dub installation. Dj's were playing over a 100 wireless headphones. The whole system was done in a tailor made Vioso setting with 6 Barco 20K projectors.

Hope you like it,

Your project really impressed and intrigued  me.  Are there other types of particles that you could sense and then display?  What would it take to put this show on in a digital planetarium?  Do the sensors have to be outdoors?  Great work.

Hi Steve, Thanks for your reply on the project ! The particle sensors are designed to measure muons only and are build by the Radboud University in The Netherlands. Sensors can be placed anywhere, since muons travel trough concrete and steel. It is just a matter of aligning the detectors so we create an ultimate path that is been followed by the projection. So, in a full dome you could put one in the top (or on the roof outside !) and 12 on the ground in the dome.  We could design a system that outputs one full dome image. What kind of real time input capabilities do you have in the digital dome ?

That's a good question Barney.  From October as part of the Domeheads project I will be putting on shows of dome films at the Thinktank dome in Birmingham.  The system there is Digistar 3 which I believe does have some kind of RT capability.  Trying to do new things with the digital dome.  In time I would like to try out things that have never been done before. If there was any chance of a collaboration in the future I would be interested. How you would market this to make a night out featuring this spectacle, we'd have to talk about.  The Thinktank dome is only 70 seats which will not provide the revenue for everything I would like to do in there, so any collaboration would be more for love than for money.  There is area adjacent to the dome - the Domeheads, 'social zone' which could be used.  Will your project ever be able to be condensed effectively into one box, more or less.  What would be your costs - roughly?

Hi Steve,

We are working on a scaled down version from this, in a more portable size then this one...The sensors will be much smaller (like shoeboxes) and other things would be easyer as well. So we should be able to work on that. We have to make a decision to go for distributed output (like now) or single output (so we can go into any system). Problem is our big enemy called resolution.... What kind of RT input would the Digistar have? and is there any latency in that path ? Costs i would discuss by mail...info@officebroomer.com

Cheers, Barney

Yes the resolution problem, something I am having to come to terms with for new material for the Domeheads project.  Good that you are scaling down the hardware.  The Domeheads plan for a large dome-like dance event featuring innovations like yours is planned but even if work started to day it wouldn't be until Autumn next year.  Will email - thanks Barney.

Hi Guys .. this looks a great project, could we be kept informed, we have some great portable domes from 10m to over 25m abd this could be something we are really interested in going forwards in 2012.

Many thanks Stephen@lm-productions.com
